R 966 proves as solid as a rock for Tarmac

One of the most popular and in-demand machines within the existing rental fleet is the 70-tonne class excavator. However, when the R 970 SME was recently due for replacement, (Liebherr Rental operate a strict three-year replacement programme), the R 966 was brought into Tarmac – one of Rental’s long-term customers – at their Hendre quarry in North Wales.

The 55-hectare Hendre quarry has been worked for over a century by its past owners and has supplied much of the raw materials for important developments across North Wales, Cheshire and Merseyside. Recent investments in developing the crushing and screening plants at the quarry, along with the purchase of new front-line rigid trucks, has increased the quarry’s productivity to meet the ever-increasing demand from its customers. With their own front-line excavator being side-lined, Quarry Manager Connor Mitchell called on the services of Liebherr Rental’s Area Manager, Gareth Blythin, to supply a suitable replacement.

“We spoke to Gareth in February 2021 about taking their R 970 into the quarry to help out with additional works we required. Gareth was able to put good deal together for us and we duly took delivery of the excavator. While we are looking to bring in our own replacement, market conditions, delivery times and spiralling costs have made it more cost effective for us to retain the Liebherr Rental machine until a time comes when a suitable replacement becomes available. What we get from Liebherr is a new machine, fully specified to work in our environment and with the back-up and service that we would expect from one of the industry leading names.”
